Charleston, May 4 , 1861.
Dear Sir: I enclose a letter which I have addressed to the Secretary of the Navy; if this is the proper department, please forward for me.
We want to fit out the Nashville and can give her an armament that will, with her speed, make her quite formidable, but desire to give it as little publicity as possible.
Yours, respectfully,
C. H. Stevens.
Hon. C. G. Memminger,
Secretary Treasury.

Charleston, May 4, 1861.
Dear Sir: Will you be good enough to give me such information as will enable parties here to take out letters of marque for a steamer of large class, which can be sent out now on short notice with such armament as will make her very effective not only against the commerce but the navy vessels of the United States. Your early attention will greatly oblige.
Respectfully,
C. H. Stevens
Hon. S. R. Mallory,
Secretary Navy, Montgomery.
