Briefly, according to legend, Petit Jean was a young French woman who
disguised herself as a cabin boy, known as Petit Jean (Little
John) and accompanied her beloved on an early French exploration of
America, . Becoming ill, her disguise was discovered before her
death and burial on the Mountain that became known as "Petit Jean."
