(1855) December 10th.—There is trouble in the air but I cannot find out just what it is. The grown folks keep very quiet when we children are around and if they are talking when we come into the room they stop right away; I wonder what it is? When I asked father, he said, “Some day I will tell you.” When he says that I wait.
Susan Bradford was 9 years old when this 1855 entry was made. In an entry 10 days later, Susan says that the trouble is about Abolitionists.
