Charleston Mercury
May 1, 1861
The women of Carolina, ever public-spirited and self sacrificing, have always given their approving smiles to the efforts of the brave and true. As a recent instance of this spirit, we have been allowed an opportunity of inspecting a massive gold medal, an offering from the lady friends of the Palmetto Guard, as a remembrance of their long-to-be-remembered 12th and 13th April, 1861.
The medal is of gold, and elegantly wrought. On the obverse, a Palmetto tree in centre, with Rattlesnake in coil, rattles sprung; over the tree the words ‘PALMETTO GUARD,’ and around the border, ‘their mothers, sisters, wives and daughters.’ On reverse, the Stevens’ Battery in the foreground, with State flag—Gun No. 1 just fired—Fort Sumter, with the Federal flag about falling—the fleet in the distance; above is the motto, ‘None but the brave deserve the fair;’ below, ‘April 12th and 13th, 1861.’ A richly engraved border surrounds the whole. This beautiful work of art is from the jewelry store of Messrs. SPENCER & TEAGUE, and the engraving by the now well known engraver.
