On Friday last, during the absence of the White family, the residence of Dr. C. B. Raines, Jr., about four miles from this town on the Palestine road, was destroyed by fire. The house and kitchen together with all the furniture, the wearing apparel of the family, silver ware and a considerable quantity of jewelry were consumed. The fire is supposed to be the work of a negro man belonging to the family, who is now in jail awaiting his trial.
On Friday night last, the house of Dr. Shelton, in New Salem, Rusk County was burnt, supposed to be the work of a white incendiary.—Rusk Enquirer.
