New York Times, March 7, 1860

A shocking but painfully common casualty was repeated yesterday on the Delaware River. A new steamboat, named the Alfred Thomas, which had been built at Easton, to ply between Belvidere, New Jersey, and Port Jervis, set out from Easton in the morning, to ascend the stream. There appears to have been a large number of passengers on board. Hardly had the boat passed from the sight of the starting place when the boiler exploded, tearing the hull to pieces, and violently scattering the passengers in all directions. The exact number of killed and wounded is still unascertained. Ten names of the dead have been given, and eleven of those seriously injured. It is feared the loss is much greater.
